Dental Braces: What Are They And How Much Do They Cost?

Today, we’re going to look into the current cost of dental braces in Nigeria.

Nowadays, adults as well as children can wear braces. Adults increasingly go above and beyond to maintain excellent dental health, which has increased demand and cost for braces in Nigeria. Dental braces are crucial for a variety of reasons, including occlusion correction and aesthetic enhancement. Their significance cannot be overstated.

Given the current situation of the economy, many people are finding it more and more difficult to pay for their regular expenses, let alone the additional medical costs associated with dental treatment. For those of you who might not have dental health insurance, this is primarily the case.

What Are Dental Braces?

Braces are dental equipment that can be used to straighten teeth that are misaligned, crooked, or crowded. While braces are most commonly used by teenagers, they can also be worn by adults.

With the use of braces, you can shift your teeth into the ideal position by gently and consistently applying pressure. The brackets, wires, and bands are its three basic components. Each tooth has a bracket, which are tiny pieces of ceramic or metal. The force that moves the teeth is produced by wires, which are tiny metal wires that link the brackets. Elastic or metal rings, known as bands, are used to secure the wires.

The way braces work is that they progressively reshape the tissues around your jawbone. The teeth are drawn in the direction of the tension as the wires are tightened. As a result, one side of the tooth’s bone dissolves and new bone grows on the other. Bone remodelling is the term for this process, which might take several months or even years to finish.

Types

1. Metal braces

Metal braces gradually move your teeth by using wires, brackets, and bands made of stainless steel.

Each tooth will have a bracket bonded (glued) to it by an orthodontist, who will also layer a thin, flexible archwire over the brackets. Ligatures, which are tiny elastic bands, hold the wire firmly in place.

When you smile, your metal braces are obvious. If you want your braces to blend in with your teeth, you can have transparent or tooth-colored ligatures. Or, if you’re in the mood for something festive, go for ligatures with vibrant colours.

2. Ceramic braces

The function of ceramic braces, often known as transparent braces, is identical to that of metal braces. The main difference is that your smile will appear natural because the brackets, wires, and ligatures are tooth-colored. Ceramic braces are less obvious, but they are still visible. Ceramic braces have the disadvantage of being more brittle than metal braces, which increases the likelihood of them breaking.

3. Lingual braces

Traditional braces and lingual braces are alike. However, rather than the front surfaces of your teeth, they touch the backs. The majority of people who select lingual braces do so in order to conceal their braces from others.

4. Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces resemble regular metal braces in appearance. The primary distinction is that self-ligating braces use an integrated mechanism to hold the archwire in place as opposed to ligatures, which are tiny elastic bands.

5. Clear aligners

Clear aligners are an alternative to braces, sometimes referred to as “invisible braces.” The Clear aligners use a series of specially constructed trays to gradually straighten your teeth in place of braces and wires. Well-known brands are ClearCorrect® and Invisalign®.

You wear each set of aligner trays for these systems for around two weeks at a time. After that, you replace those trays with the subsequent set in the series. Clear aligners can be taken off, unlike metal braces. However, you must wear them for a minimum of 22 hours each day. Only when eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth should you remove your aligners.

How Much Does Dental Braces Cost?

The type of braces you select, how complicated your case is, the orthodontist’s skill level, and your location all affect how much dental braces will cost. Metal braces are often the least expensive, with ceramic, lingual, and Invisalign braces following in order of cost. In Nigeria, dental braces typically cost between N500,000 and N2,000,000, though the exact amount you pay may depend on your unique circumstances.

1. Lingual braces: They can cost between N1.2 million to N2 million, based on the hospital or dental clinic, the area, and, typically, how challenging the application is.

2. Ceramic braces: Depending on the dental facility and how long the patient plans to wear it, they can cost anywhere from N800, 000 to N2 million.

3. Invisalign braces: In most dental facilities, the average cost of an Invisalign treatment is between N600, 000 and N1.3 million.

4. Metal braces: The entire cost of metal dental braces ranges from N500,000 to N1.5 million.

Benefits

When your teeth are properly aligned, it’s simpler to practise appropriate dental hygiene. Plaque is more difficult to remove from teeth that are crowded or crooked, which causes calculus—a hard, white substance—to accumulate there. Calculus contributes to the development of gum disease and periodontal disease, which erodes teeth and finally results in their loss. Therefore, orthodontic treatment not only makes you look better, but it also reduces your chance of developing oral disease.
